Privacy Policy — Burn Unit

Last updated: 28 August 2026

The short version

The AI that writes your roasts runs on your phone, not on a server. There is no account and no sign-up, and nothing about you personally is collected. The app asks once whether it may keep anonymous copies of your roasts to improve its safety filters. If you say no, nothing is ever sent, and the app works exactly the same.

Where your text goes

When you ask for a roast, the text is processed by an AI model stored on your device and run on your device's own processor. It is not sent anywhere to be turned into a roast, and roasting works with the phone in airplane mode.

Separately, and only if you agree, we record each roast: what you typed, the roast the model wrote, the results of the automatic safety checks, and timing information such as how long it took and how many tokens it used. This is sent to a server we run ourselves. It is not sent to any advertising network, data broker, or AI training provider, and it is not used to train any model.

You are asked once, before your first roast, and nothing is sent unless you choose to help. You can change your mind at any time using the line at the bottom of the roast screen — turning it off stops any further records immediately.

What is not attached to it

No account, no email address, no name, no phone number, no advertising ID, no device identifier, and no installation ID. There is deliberately nothing in these records that identifies you or your phone, and nothing that lets two roasts be recognised as coming from the same person.

Like any request over the internet, your IP address is visible to our server while the record is delivered. It is not stored as part of the record.

The consequence of being anonymous

Because these records contain nothing that identifies you, we cannot find or delete "your" records on request — there is no way to tell which came from which person. We would rather be anonymous and unable to answer that question than attach an identifier to everyone in order to be able to answer it. If that trade is not one you want to make, decline when the app asks, or turn it off later; the app is fully functional either way.

Reporting a roast

Every roast has a Report this roast control. It always writes a copy to storage private to the app on your own device. If you have agreed to the anonymous records above, it also flags that roast's existing record for review along with the reason you picked. If you have not, the report stays on your phone and nothing is transmitted.

Permissions

Permission Why
Internet To download the AI model on first run, and — only if you agree — to send the anonymous roast records described above.
Foreground service, data sync So the model download continues if you leave the app.
Notifications To show download progress and tell you when it is ready.

The app does not request location, contacts, camera, microphone, or access to your files.

Children

Burn Unit is not intended for anyone under 17 and is not directed to children. It produces crude humour and strong language. The roast records described above are anonymous and are not knowingly collected from children; we have no way to determine the age of anyone using the app, which is why it is rated for adults and not offered to younger audiences.

Deleting your data

To remove everything the app has stored on your phone — the model, its cache, and any reports you recorded — uninstall the app, or use Settings → Apps → Burn Unit → Storage → Clear storage.

The anonymous roast records described above cannot be deleted on request, for the reason given under "The consequence of being anonymous".

AI-generated content

Roasts are produced by a language model. They are invented text. They may be inaccurate, unfair or offensive, and nothing the app writes is a statement of fact about any real person.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes and the updated version is published at this same URL. If a future version of the app ever collects something new, or attaches an identifier to what it already collects, that change will be described here before the version that does it is released.
